Dont forget, the Russians were able to reinforce Moscow with the Siberians (winterised troops) during operation Typhoon which had a crucial effect. Moscow may well have fallen without that intervention. The only reason these troops were freed up was that the Japs were now committed in the pacific against the USA and the Commonwealth.
If the Japs had an easy ride (by sinking those carrriers) the Russians would have been hard pushed to strip the far eastern defences as they did.
What failures in 1941 were you thinking of ?
