Hi,
Many thanks for all of the responses, and for the party in my honour!
Beginning to feel as if I am flogging a dead horse with this one though.
In answer to the questions raised:
- the only verbal offer and acceptance was of the initial six month extension
- the notice period is one month, which equates to roughly £10k
- the contract for the initial 6 month stint was exchanged just over four months into it!
- both contracts agreed (ie the initial six months, plus the three month extension) were between myself (operating under an umbrella) and the agent.
- I had reservations about the three month extension, as I felt that the company (via the new line manager) had shown bad form by renaging on a verbal agreement

Unfortunately you prevaricated, and from the new manager's point of view, you might have appeared bolshy.
Am I right in saying that there was no verbal agreement, just a verbal offer that was withdrawn before you agreed to it?

was this your first contract?
2 months or 2 decades - a contract schedule is only ever as long as its notice period.
you should have accepted the extension. never mind, chalk it up and move on or face a bucket load of stress and a pocket full of nothing.
