They'll also need hangar space/dispersal areas to protect them from drive-by AK47 fire and/or RPGs. All this coupled with the fact that in what is, essentially, a guerrilla war, airpower is of limited strategic use. On the face of it an additional 2 aircraft sounds about right.

FFS, send 200 airplanes and helicopters to support your forces, or 2000 if necessary to get the job done - if you can't then don't get involved then in the first place.

    FFS:

"Dr Fox said: "The deployment of these two extra aircraft is another illustration of the UK government's commitment to achieving success in operations in Afghanistan."

Maybe he is right here - 2 aircraft actually is another illustration of Govts commitment.

"The following is a partial and unofficial list of helicopter and airplane crashes that occurred during the Soviet war in Afghanistan of 1979-89. In total, at least 333 helicopters and 118 jets crashed during the war.[1]"

List of Soviet aircraft losses in Afghanistan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - that's just those that crashed/got shot down. The total number of supporting Soviet forces were at least 3-5 times more or 1500 aircraft.

Afghanistan needs to be carpet bombed to bring them in to line. There is not point pussy footing around, use nukes if necessary.
