"Armchair General" drivel. It's not just a question of 'sending more' planes. You have to have the personnel to fly, navigate, service and maintain them. You'll need sufficient fuel to fly them, and stocks of armaments to make flying them worth while, as well as appropriate levels of stock of essential spares. They'll also need hangar space/dispersal areas to protect them from drive-by AK47 fire and/or RPGs. All this coupled with the fact that in what is, essentially, a guerrilla war, airpower is of limited strategic use. On the face of it an additional 2 aircraft sounds about right.Originally posted by AtW View PostWhole

jets sent to support ground operations!!!

FFS, send 200 airplanes and helicopters to support your forces, or 2000 if necessary to get the job done - if you can't then don't get involved then in the first place.
FFS:
"Dr Fox said: "The deployment of these two extra aircraft is another illustration of the UK government's commitment to achieving success in operations in Afghanistan."

Maybe he is right here - 2 aircraft actually is another illustration of Govts commitment.
"The following is a partial and unofficial list of helicopter and airplane crashes that occurred during the Soviet war in Afghanistan of 1979-89. In total, at least 333 helicopters and 118 jets crashed during the war.[1]"
List of Soviet aircraft losses in Afghanistan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - that's just those that crashed/got shot down. The total number of supporting Soviet forces were at least 3-5 times more or 1500 aircraft.

Listen here me old Ruski, 2 Tornados with Gibbons software in is worth twice the commitment of the pathetic Ruski one back in the eighties.
