I remember an archaeology type from my college days doing the dig that was the basis of the Viking Centre.

Ooer, must have been a different dig, as archaeological girlie was doing a dig in 1976. Hmm, methinks I sense some turf wars behind the above quote

Yes.

It's changed somewhat over the past 20 years I found when I was last there. Lots of newer technology like moving talking blinking puppets, but no more hologram of the Coppergate helmet at the end. But has some interesting people to chat to at the end. There is a separate place where you can also do an artificial dig too.

My vote would be:

• Railway museum
  a walk around the city walls and
  a walk along the river
  a river cruise
  The Minster. This is an impressive site even from the outside. It used to be free (it is a church after all) but unfortunately, there is now an entry charge which is quite steep
  A general mooch around the Shambles and surrounding streets

Depends what you are into, but:

• Cliffords Tower - see it before they surround it with a shopping centre
• York Castle Museum
• York Minster
• York City Walls - open until 9pm at this time of year
• Top Tourist Attractions In York
• York Art Gallery - never been myself, but there's a Chinese exhibition there at the moment

Oh dear. The Sir Nigel Gresley (which had a top speed of 112mph) is in daily operation on the North Yorkshire Moors railway, so you'd need good eyesight to see it from the museum!

The Mallad that was in the museum was moved this week, so there is no Mallard to see in York these days. That said, the museum is very interesting and is free.

What to do in York? What a silly question! Go to the National Railway museum it's a great day out. Even to the layman there's plenty of interst; there Sir Nigel Gresley, a mallard class loco from the 1930s which was the fastes thing on wheels at the time reaching speeds of 126.4 mph and the experimental APT unit - a gas turbined super fast bog unit that travelled at 170 mph.
