Chief Secretary to the Treasury David Laws has accused the former Labour government of a "scorched earth strategy" on spending.

Shadow Chancellor Alistair Darling said the £6.2bn cuts outlined for this financial year went "far beyond" what had been pledged by the Tories.

He said everyone understood the need to reduce borrowing but "to do it in a way that does not damage growth or the economic fabric of this country".
