I read a comment somewhere from a BA employee that it's all about a power struggle within Unite.
If true, I don't blame either the employees or BA for wanting to get shut of them.

BA got no chance until it deals with the union - I can't see any other way but to effectively liquidate BA as it is and sell airplanes, company name, landing slots etc to other companies - possibly completely new that won't have that union there. Maybe that will teach other unions that if they keep company hostage then they'll lose everything.

b) the union member has been caught taking the piss using "union" activity as a ruse to make him untouchable.

I am sure I have seen this sort of pattern before:

1. Worker is sacked because of non-attendance
2. Worker claims they were not at work because they were on Union Business so it doesn't count

It was train drivers I remember last hearing this one about IIRC.

You would have thought that BA would be very sure of their ground before they took this step but that would require a degree of competence that I have discovered you cannot assume anyone possesses.
