The brilliant thing about the child's picture is that it's actually correct in almost every way. The only slight criticism I can make is the shape of the mound, which is perhaps a little too steep for a stratovolcano. Not enough to avoid the 8 year old being awarded a 9 1/2 out of 10 and an effort star though.

It was taken on March 24, before the plume spread out over Europe.

Hang on a mo, if that was taken in the last day or so, and north is towards the top (and the position of the shadows suggests it is) then the ash cloud is heading North North East.

So, given that Iceland is hundreds of miles north of the UK anyway. why are all flights over Britain being cancelled?

(and it isn't even as if the jet stream is a large circular swirl which might carry ash back round south to our vicinity - It just goes moreorless round the Earth at the same latitude, AIUI)
