I see that a return in Luftansa costs about 160 quids. Any cheaper way? As in, Can I do the split ticketing doodah bit and get there cheaper ?

hitching - if you have time it's certainly possible, my guess you could do it in 2 days if you're lucky

easyjet flight lon to munich - £88
munich then train to nurnberg - 54 EUR each way
so total approx £170


air berlin do a flight stanstead to nurnberg for around £120 if you book a few weeks in advance.. that'd be your cheapest and not a terrible airline to fly with, free sandwich and beer

train direct to london - forget it, my guess is £200+, not even worth searching for IMO

On Jet2 you get to pay 6 Euro for the smallest tin of Stella I've ever seen......
