The Perfect Radiator

Last Sunday I bought some central heating cleaner, inhibitor and 20x radiator valves with a view to draining the system, replacing all the valves (as a few were leaking), clean and refill.

I sent the wife and kid up the grandparents for the day, 7 hours later I'd stained 3 carpets and only managed to do 3 valves before refilling and getting the carpet cleaner out.

I'll be doing the rest in the summer.

Don't do the heating on the battlestation then!

Lucky for me the black water stains came out easily enough.

My next problem is why the hot water tank (indirect cylinder) emptied when I drained the radiator circuit? AFAIK the only way this could happen would be because the coil has ruptured and there's cross contamination with the hot water.

I've not put the cleaner in the system yet as I'm worried it would contaminate the bath water.

Don't ask me, I only bleed radiators. Well, I am a dab hand with the radiator enamel spray but only when there is snow on the ground.

One room at a time is my approach. Leaky values rarely need anything more than a clean and a bit of plumbers tape.

And, yes, that last bit of black water, much loved by carpets, only comes out when the actually take the radiator off the bracket.

I have now discovered how to get the best finish when spraying a radiator.

Do it in the cold!

Did it in the garden yesterday and found that the paint did not dry for hours - normally it dries within minutes - and it gives a perfect industrial quality finish.

I will be fitting and bleeding it this morning if anyone wants to watch.
