We had a ton of sand delivered one year, but the carrots still died, apparently because it was beach sand and full of salt.

Had some great spuds the last few years though. Clay here too.
The first year we did the veggie patch we planted some sweetcorn thinking "no chance" but tried anyhow just throwing them in a corner.
By the end of summer we had these 6'-ish tall sweetcorn plants with cobs all over them - most surprising. Have grown some thing every year since.
Another failure is the toms, but we have tried them without a greenhouse.
Cougettes were a huge sucess, literally, I have yet to see another that big.

I'm interested to know what went wrong with the carrots.
Mine split into many prongs, no matter how much i did the soil over or whatever additions I put in. Not that it matters any more as have planned to build home office where the veggy patch once was.
