    Sounds like you have a fungal infection in your nail.
    It's not usually life-threateneing, I think less than five thousand people a year die an agonising death due to it. Have you had any dizzy spells,lack of sleep or loss of concentration? If so , keep your thumb somewhere warm, moist and away from free flowing air, and go to see your doctor.
    I suggest sticking it up your bum.
