I think this is a big problem in Scotland, they even tried to stop shops selling normal chip pans. Tried to get people to buy eletric ones, that don't over heat.

I once owned a house where the tenant had a chip pan fire. Took 8 weeks to repair the damage.

Slightly off-topic but reminds me of a lad I met at a wedding. Story goes when they were at university in Scotland, after a heavy session one winter, the guys stayed overnight at my mate's house. All very drunk, this one lad took his shirt off and fell asleep against a cold radiator. Heating came on in the small hours and the lad awoke to find himself stuck to it.
Ambulance crew had to peel him off. Ghastly.

For me the trouble is remembering things

Well I'm glad from the other answers that I'm not the only guilty contractor in that regard.

Done that (more than once) while stone cold sober. My study is located at the opposite end of the house, one floor up, so if I get too engrossed, the time can fly by and I can't smell the burning...Originally posted by Zippy View PostI'll own up to cremating a pizza while drunk.

There is no way will I attempt to do anything more than put the kettle on once I've had a drink. Even that would be taking a risk.

Chicken pie got nuked last year after I had fallen asleep on the sofa, gf was none to pleased to come in the house and find me snoring while the oven was making a good impression of a smoke machine.Originally posted by Zippy View PostI'll own up to cremating a pizza while drunk.

Yorkshire Fire Brigade did a big "don't drink & fry" campaign a few years ago.

I did exactly that last weekend. Surprised I wasn't asphyxiated.Originally posted by KentPhilip View Post
Have you ever done anything similar? I'll put my hand up first - I once incinerated a pizza after 4 hours at gas mark 8 in the oven. It was literally burned to a black crisp

Fire warnings over drunk cooking
I saw this amusing story of a bloke who put something on the grill whilst drunk, fell asleep, and burned his house down:
