Child A drools, and sniffs and fiddles but manages to wait for the grown up to come back and give them an extra sweetie.
That child grows up to be the sort of person who does what they are told at significant personal discomfort and annoyance for tiny rewards.
Child B thinks "What a stupid test", eats the reward and gets to go home and watch the Magic Roundabout.
That child grows up to be cynical, not follow orders blindly and think about what they want and act accordingly.
I'm the sort of child that would have rung the bell, the psychotherapist comes in and sees me chewing. I am dismissed and the brainiac goes to put out a marshmallow for the next test subject ... but the bag is strangely empyty...
