Everybody "hates" their local rivals (e.g. Rangers/Celtic), but Man U are everybody's local rivals. Let me explain.

Man U fans come from all over the country. So those who live around North London rival Arsenal, Spurs and Watford fans... those around West London rival Chelsea, QPR, Fulham and Brentford... in Bristol they rival Bristol City and Bristol Rovers... and so on.

The other thing is this. These fans don't support their local sides, but instead chose Man U. They explain that this is because of their long-lost great-grandads or fifth cousins who lived somewhere in Lancashire. This doesn't stack up of course. Consider the number of fans in London who support Birmingham and say it is because a long lost relative lived there. Birmingham is bigger than Manchester, so there should be even more of them, but I don't know any.

Man U are successful, so the real reason, as the rest of fans know, is the reflected glory and the kudos they think they get in the classroom, the workplace or the pub.

There are Man U fans from Manchester - such as Tony who posts on here - but generally these aren't hated much by the rest of the country, only by Man City fans.

The bulletin board software inserts spaces into long text strings. I think it does this to prevent the screen width getting unmanageable. As for how many characters it permits before doing so ... you count them:

    123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789. 123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.123456789.

    That was 1000 characters long.

Edit: every 50 characters it inserts a space.

    Double check:

    11111222223333344444555556666677777888889999900000 I-bet-there's-a-space-before-the-'I'.

Your :laugh smilies each take up 6 characters and you put no spaces between them. I would expect every 8th to get broken (except in the odd occasion where the space gets inserted after the 'h' and before the next ':'. That does indeed happen after the third and before the fourth block of smilies.

The solution is to put spaces between the smilies thus:

    HTH

PS What was the joke, anyway?
