Thought as much, though, I'd get much less from a dealer, i got offered about 6k about a year ago.

Might as well get rid of it and get summat fun.

Now what to buy next, am toying with the following:

    Elise, Atom, Caterham or Abarth.

With the elise and the abarth they can manoeuver about town, the others, hmm I'd envisage some fun track days or haring around country roads.

embarassing to admit but it's a 1.9l (diesel) 130bhp multijet grande punto sporting, metallic paint, leather upholstery, alloy wheels, 57 reg with slightly over 4k on the clock.

Given me other car is much nicer and more fun to drive, this one ends up sitting on the drive, so i thought i'd get shot of it and buy summat more interesting.

It's a car auction site. If you don't want the hassle of selling to the public then this is a good option.
That's probably a good call as auction houses, especially in the south east (Ealing for example) are full of mug punters on a Saturday. Waving their What Car and Parkers in the air. Who goes to an auction with a Joe Public guide FFS?
The place is also full of very happy traders who have transported POS down from scotland and benefiting from said mugs paying silly prices for them.

Yes this was on the national news just last week, many 2nd-hand cars have gone up in value considerably in the last few months... apparently that's never happened before IIRC.
Some cars and tend to be nearly new, but bear in mind up until recently it was hard to get even the trade price which also never happened before as long as I can remember so really they've have risen from a very bad place.
Yes, a case of the market rebalancing. People wouldn't touch old cars because it was so easy to get credit for a new one, hence the price of old cars had been pushed through the floor in recent years.

With credit now harder to get hold of, people are buying what they can afford, so the market demand is more evenly spread.

Also consumers and firms are choosing to keep old of their old cars, rather than simply buying new, so reducing supply of used cars.

Rising demand and reduced supply - Economics 101

Pistonheads depends on the car though, if it's a 1.2 Fiesta it's not really the place to advertise.

WHS. Pistonheads + Autotrader + maybe FleaBay.

You may also try a local (indy or main) car dealer. They (were) crying out for stock, and much less hassle.

I sold my Mum's old banger using webuyanycar last year. Online they quoted £150, but when I got there they only offered me £75. They do it every time apparently. They even sent me an email saying my current car has just increased in value by £1000! Bargain.

2-3 years ago i.e. before the recession when everyone was flush with cash. Entirely different market in the last 12 -18 months unfortunately. Anecdotally I know of a few people who can't/couldn't sell their cars at good book prices and having sold one myself this year I was getting few sniffs and took a while to find a buyer of a car that would have been easy to sell before the slump. Still the banger market is holding up well due to economic realities.

    C/ Not for classified ads

PS If you are selling cars for £350 I'd imagine top and bottom book are very close. I'd expect the OP is selling something other than a POS

B/ We will have to differ on this one. I understand your point though.
C/ It was a POS. I placed a classified ad, then ebay contacted me and said it was a car sale, and not a classified so had to give them £70. I got burned, and wanted to share my experience to warn others.

B/ You'd be surprised. This will still be cheaper than a dealer. I have mates in the used car game so no just about every trick in the book.
C/ I thought that. I sold a car on ebay for around £350, and had to pay them £70. They take a percentage of the sale value.
