One other piece of advice; even though everyone is in really good spirits, don't mess with security. They take no prisoners!!

If any of you are in Munich right now or before the fest starts it is worth going down to the site.
It is an impressive thing to see during construction. You can get a bier, some of the tents are loaded but there is a workers tent which will serve passers by.

I wondered why people were talking of booking the tents when most of the time we managed to wonder straight in? Apart from the HB tent on Saturday where they locked all the doors until a 50 deep crow built up then let fly resulting in massive beer fueled stampede.
This is a must do before you die type event, I've got the obligatory stolen stein souvenir in my kitchen.

I love the way the funfair is open for 20 minutes after the tents shut, is the Olympic 5 loop roller coaster and the merry-go-round schnapps bar still their?
I went for 8 days back in 2001 which was way too long, by the last few days no mater how long I stood in the shower I came out stinking of stale beer.

I've been twice before and am heading back for the last weekend this year. It is absolutely the most fun you can have getting drunk.
Tip the waitresses a few euros each time and they'll make sure your table is beered up, otherwise it can be a big challenge to get a drink. Each waitress will have a few tables that are hers so don't try and order from any of them wandering by, and they're also your source of fried chicken, pretzels and pork knuckles that you'll be wanting soon enough.
Don't go in the middle weekend, there's an Italian public holiday around that time and all the Germans stay away.
The most popular tent (which was the Hacker tent last year) had a queue out the front from 9 in the morning, bear in mind it opened at 10:30 and didn't start serving until 11. If you go on a weekend you won't have much chance of getting in at all in a big group if you're not there when the tents open.
Enjoy seeing the many thousands of pissed people getting trolleyed together and try an d imagine the same thing attempted in the UK

The pot ones you see at fests are called Krug.
The glass ones are called Mass and I believe they weigh about 1 kilo, so 2 full.
The litre mark is about 2/3 the way up and the head usualy settles to the line though Oktoberfest is renowned for short measures. It is oft said that they make more money from the bier they dont sell.

A lot of the Bedienung (German title) tend to rest a lot of the weight on their ample bussoms. Some are remarkably petite for the feats of strength they perform each day.

They are not paid as you would expect either. They have to buy a "licence" to sell the bier. They pay a little less than they charge you (it is a fixed amount) for the bier. The woman I spoke to said it takes her the first week to pay off the licence and the second week is hers. She uses the money to pay for her family holiday.
That si why they carry as much as they can and work as fast as they can.
If you are a big group and need a table then asking a waitress to help and ordering 20 biers is a good plan. You usualy need to be able to do this in German though.

The waitresses (who I'm sure have pretty German titles) must be have fingers like sausages. The beer Steins can weigh 5 lbs and they might carry about 8 of them.
How is this woman supporting all those beers for example?

Try going to the Starkbierfest in Munich in March, you'll be legless after 1-2 beers
