    If you do that though your committing to being on the bench for a long time ? Personally would be looking for another job to start asap...

    Most PhDs just do it for the qualification but end up useless at anything useful.
    If you love a subject nothing stops you reading about the bits that interest you whenever you want.
    I know a fair bit about discipline having done all my quals part-time, so I really don't think that would be an issue.

    I work in IT so I don't do anything useful anyway. I think being a village idiot might screw up my chances of getting in though, so I'll leave that off my application
