I was a Fender Strat man myself. Les Pauls were always for style over content types.
But there's no denying the huge legacy and influcene of the man.
Ironic that his name is associated with all these great rock guitarists, when he himself was a fruity jazz player.

A sad loss. He created the guitar that so much of my favourite music was played on and they in turn inspired me to buy one and learn to play. I still hope that one day I can buy an original '59 Les Paul but they're pricey in the extreme.
