I still use Quick Books V3.0 for Windows.

It's ancient (from about 1991 I think) but still does the job for me.

It does invoicing and VAT easily. Not Americanised at all IMO (well, V3.0 isn't).

I trust it to do my VAT 100 without going back through and manually checking. Does my P&L and Balance Sheet at the drop of a hat. An optimum piece of software. Best investment in software I ever made.

It is flexible and covers all of my freelancing activities, whether 'contracting' or not.

It's one of the few apps I actually need to run Windows for (in a VM on OS X).

Never found anything better, but I guess, like everything, newer versions of the product are past the optimal point on the curve.

Help With Accounting Program for Contractor

Can anyone suggest the best Accounting software for an IT contractor?
I am looking for something cheap, preferably free. This is mainly for my own records and to make things like invoicing easier, I do have an accountant who does everything from speadsheets.
I downloaded quick books bit is appears very Americanised.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
