Europe vs America

Yep

It is interesting becuase it flies in the face of conventional thought that the pure capitalist model is the best way foward. however not pro socialist, just examining the characteristics and perceived merits of the the conflicting ideologies

We have all heard that working longer hours does not neccessarily constitute higher productivity and that work-life balance is essential for optimum perfomance.

I enjoyed the analogy of the coffee in the beginning, I thought that was pretty good.

The fact that the infant mortality rate in America is on a par with Lithuania also makes scary reading.

Blair just does not get it, UK will never gain much influence of america again for one simple reason, there is not much potencial profit for the americans in giving that influence.

Either the Russians and/or Chinese will USA's "partner" down the road, UK will only ever be "that desperate ex down that road who you shag when the new GF is not around/her time of the month"

UK either needs to stand on it's own (play a modern day switzerland) or go with europe, trying to link with USA is foolish as there it is operating at an unrecoverable disadvantage from the get go

It is true that the UK today manages both to be part of the European Union and to manifest some of the trashier aspects of American commercial culture, but I doubt that this is what Garton Ash has in mind. He appears, rather, to see London's role as mitigating the damage done by American unilateralism on the one hand and "Euro-Gaullism" on the other ("the Chiracian version of Euro-Gaullism leads nowhere"). British hourly productivity is well below most West European rates. However, New Labour was supposed to combine the best of the European social model and American entrepreneurship: Garton Ash himself concedes it has not quite managed this.
