German officer worker David Heiss guilty of murdering student Matthew Pyke
David Heiss, a German officer worker, has been found guilty of murdering Matthew Pyke, a British student, after he became obsessed with his girlfriend Joanna Witton.
Heiss, 21, stabbed Mr Pyke 86 times after becoming infatuated with Miss Witton.
He forced his way in to the Nottingham flat Mr Pyke shared with his 21-year-old girlfriend and stabbed him as he lay cowering in the corner.
In his last moments Mr Pyke, 20, had written DAV, the first three letters of Heiss's Christian name, in his own blood on the side of his computer to alert police to his killer's identity.
But the computer sciences student, of Stowmarket, Suffolk, did not survive the attack on September 19 last year, which was described by prosecutors at Nottingham Crown Court as "savage and sustained".
Heiss became obsessed with Miss Witton after meeting her through the war gaming website she ran with her boyfriend from their flat above the Orange Tree pub in North Sherwood Street in Nottingham city centre.
Mr Pyke's mother described her son as a "modest and easy-going" man.
Kim Pyke, 49, an English teacher, from Stowmarket, said: "Matthew was lovely. He had a really cheeky grin but he was a really modest boy. He was just easy-going.
"We didn't know anything he did on the computer, we just knew he was good on anything to do with computers. He was obsessed with it, really."
Describing the moment she heard that her 20-year-old son was dead, Mrs Pyke added: "We had just gone to bed. It was a Friday night at about 10.15 and there was a knock on the door. There were two local police officers who came in.
"They said they didn't have any details but that Matthew had been found dead. We couldn't believe it. Matthew had never been in trouble. He always avoided confrontation.
"We didn't know what to think. Matthew was not the sort of person who would make people angry. He wasn't the sort of person who would get that sort of response from somebody."
