I'm on 400 a day and it's bleedin expensive. A lot depends on how you want to play it. Obviously the more trips home the more expensive it becomes - I'm doing it weekly. Forget hotels in Geneva. I've been staying in Annemasse for the past 2 weeks and the IBIS there costs about 60 a night if booked at short notice and about 40 if you can book it 20 days in advance. Because of the flight times I have to travel on Sunday evening, meaning 5 nights in the hotel instead of 4. Finding a place to rent is harder that finding rocking horse poo and expensive! A beer at the bar last night was 6 quid and a big mac meal is about 11 francs or about 6.60 in our money! to give you a guide to prices Public transport is good though and cheap.

The agent will do a conversion so it's worth checking the exchange rate. There are blokes in our office who are also on 400 a day but they agreed that at a time when the exchange rate was 2 francs to the pound, meaning they are about 150 francs (about 90 quid) a day better off than me.

For my 400 a day, I should come out with 280 after tax.

If you are outside Geneva then it's supposed to be cheaper - but I wouldn't know as I've not been outside it really. That will change if I stay the course!

Sorry to hijack the thread - but Mr English - a question - what in your now learned opinion would be an absolute bottom rate to work out there considering your expenses, tax etc at the moment to make it worth going out there? (GBP)

Should be some vacancies soon, as a proportion of fair weather contractors turn down jobs that involve travelling (contact with unclean fever victims etc)

However that will probably be counter-acted by all the companies that decide to go into hibernation.

    Doomed...
