Hmm, I drive the A3 every week but for some reason none of those towns appear on the exit signs. I quite like the road, especially the bit by Bad Camberg services where I can really let go. Definitely no traffic lights on this motorway, baby!

I've done it loads, and it is superb. Infact I've driven at 110 MPH down most of it (dodging speed cameras).

It's the best road into London IMO. Does get a bit rubbish around the Robin Hood roundabout. And forget going through Putney and Wansdworth; make sure you turn off at Roehampton.

Compare and contrast with the M3 which just leaves you in Richmond, or the M23 which dumps you in Croydon

When I last did it there was a stretch where the road narrowed, with a big roundabout and a speed camera. I may have changed now, but it used to be a massive bottleneck

Why don't you drive down and find out?

There are some lovely stretches of the A3 such as Thursley and the bit below Hindhead which I forget about. When the Hindhead tunnel is built it will be one of the best roads in the country.

I've driven from Central London to the junction with the A31 and through, just never ventured south of that. Never had reason to.

Now I'm looking in those areas I was just trying to save a wasted journey. Being near the A3 and paying the price only makes sense if it is an easy and fast journey. My search now stops north of Hindhead, tunnel or no tunnel.

Is hindehead the bit going toward London where the speed limit changes and there is a speed camera?

I've driven up and down the A3 as far south as Guildford and where it joins the A31, but is the A3 dual carriageway and free of traffic lights and roundabouts going further south?

Surrey, Hampshire or West Sussex.

Swindon is getting too gentrified for me.

Forget Liverpool and the City of Culture. The place that visitors cannot seem to get enough of at the moment is none other than Swindon, in Wiltshire.

Holiday Inn says the old Great Western Railway town is its fastest-growing tourist destination. In the past 12 months the company's Swindon hotels saw an increase in room bookings of almost 12 per cent.

The place has its critics. Author Mark Haddon, in his bestseller The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time, describes the town as 'the a**e of the world'. Comedian Eddie Izzard once claimed Swindon was a 'knackered kind of Fresno Town'.

However, not all commentators are so brutal about the destination that has outperformed all other locations in Britain for hotel night stays.

According to Channel 4's Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud, 'Swindon is a delight - I love it. I travel all over Britain, I look at a lot of really crap towns and Swindon is not a crap town.'

The A3 south of hindhead has a roundabout at the Selbourne turn-off. Other than that, its dual carriageway until it switches to the A3(M) and joins the M27 at pompey

Portsmouth (on the coast) to just South of Hindhead is fine.

Hindhead is tulip - can't wait for the tunnel, due to open sometime in 2011. They've just broken though in the middle

Perhaps if they dug south we could all drive to Aus or Nz and escape
the Uk for a year !

It continues to be Ok South Of Guildford but then turns to tulip at Hindhead and the devils punch bowl - there are ways to avoid this but to be honest
you are better off sitting in the queue !
