AA and RAC are a right rip-off

In Germany you can get full Euro cover from ADAC for about 30 quid which *includes* full cover when in the UK provided by the AA.

Yet the AA want more than this to cover you just for UK cover!

If you buy a decent car and have it serviced regularly why would you break down?

Most insurance companies will provide recovery assistance in the case of accidents.

So you have never forgotten to turn your lights off in the morning and got into the car at the end of the day and thought ****!!! (and yes mine even beeps at me if I open the door with the lights on......)

Actually, thinking about it, you can use Tesco Clubcard vouchers to pay for RAC membership at quite a discount. Might be worth having a look if that's where you shop Tony?

I'm with the RAC and the alternator went on my car just before Christmas, while at work. RAC turned up and replaced the alternator at the roadside (well, office car park). Paid parts only (£95 + VAT).

Can't see that happening with Green Flag (who I was a member of years ago and used when the electrics went on my Escort).

I have the full mashings Green Flag cover, it costs me a bit over £40 a year.

Mind you I get a massive discount as I was issued with a Staff number when I did a gig for them

I once had the misfortune of being a member of one of these smaller organisations who used a "network of local recovery agents" to come and see your car.

All it needed was some WD40 on the throttle body to stop it sticking open but the scruffy little oik who came out seemed to know less about cars than I did and was only interested in getting my car on his low-loader and towing it off to a garage. In the end I sent him off and got a friend to come rescue me with some WD40.

I've used the RAC since. I think you've got a lot more chance of getting a proper mechanic coming out than a chancer who merely possesses the ability to drive a tow-truck.

I'm looking to get covered again as my RAC membership is about to run out. I've checked online and the main ones are all pretty much of a muchness in terms of service and price. However there seem to be a load of smaller companies who provide similar services to the AA, RAC etc at a much lower price. Does any of you lot use these smaller ones in preferance to the big ones? Are they any good?
