I'd wait till the Tories get in. Much better hip replacements then. No one wants a Socialist hip in 'em.

What do the residents of the old people's home cheer when someone blows out their birthday candles?

When i had an op in December, part of the pre-op process was to check for MRSA infection, to see if i was a carrier. I was told that if I was, then I would have to wash in some special stuff for a while before the op.
I was OK, but I noticed that the nurse's station on the ward I was recovering on, had a list of all the patients who were positive for MRSA.
They did seem to be taking it very seriously and were taking extra precautions with the people who carry it.

I've know several people who've had a hip replacement, all successfully.

Perhaps - check that your mum is recouperating in nice new accomodation - usually the preserve of private health care.
If you don't ask......

Someone I know had a hip replacment - and now has MSRA in the joint. Horrible and can;t get rid of the infection for the rest of her life.

Great... even more good news. It looks like the NHS does a good job here.

I know two people who've had hip replacements,
One a colleague aged about 50, successful but longer than usual recovery time due to the different fittings/procedure they use on younger patients. I have the impression that his recovery was painful, and there are certain practical issues such as taking a dump which I believe caused him much discomfort and inconvenience for many weeks. But he walks about like a spring chicken again now.
One my gf's mother aged about 80, successful, she was up and walking within days.

Nice to hear that. My father is having one in a couple of weeks and I am a bit concerned.
