    Amazed. Santander say they will compensate clients who suffered losses in Madoff's fraud.

    It may be preferred shares (and not a 100% cash compensation) but it's still far more than I can see Uk banks doing. Although to be fair they don't have the money to do so.

    hairman Emilio Botin Monday tried to soothe angry shareholders upset about recent setbacks at the Spanish bank, promising "magnificent" results for 2008.

    Botin, speaking at a shareholders meeting in the city of Santander, Northern Spain, said results at the euro zone's largest bank by market value would be " among the best of the banking industry."
