In the 90s people were saying how crazy it was that contractors were getting paid as much as premiership footballers. I was saying if premiership footballers can get paid as much as premiership footballers, why shouldn't contractors?

Are you talking about the var keyword in C# 3.0 which is type safe and checked at compile time or the new dynamic keyword in C# 4.0 which is runtime checked?

Both have their uses in sensible hands.

Fair enough. At my lasy gig they tried to get me to put Senior Executive Consultant on my auto sig, it never got changed from Project Manager which is a simple, accurate description of what I do.

Mrs Tester’s dad spent years as an apprentice carpenter learning every aspect of his trade. A real carpenter who can start with a tree and make stuff, not a joiner who nails prefabricated planks together. He doesn’t call himself a ‘timber processing and design executive’ because he’s proud of having spent years mastering the skills of a carpenter. I think we have something to learn from him.

When I was a permie at a consultancy firm I was hired out by my boss to a big 4 consultancy who gave me business cards with the title ‘Principal Consultant; Systems Quality, Energy and Utilities Sector’ and charged the end client 4000 Dutch guilders (nearly 2000 euros) per day for my services. I had less than 5 years experience and was on a salary of about 60,000 guilders (less than 30,000 euros). I asked by boss how I should try to justify my rate and somewhat inflated job title and he said ’wear a suit, go to every meeting you possibly can and hold plenty of powerpoint presentations’. ClientCo didn’t ask any questions except when they saw my bashed up old Alfa and asked why such a well paid chap would drive such a cheap car. I referred them to the Consultancy who provided me with an Audi A4 from their car pool and I never heard any more of it.

Incredible isn't it that you can get maybe £200/day as a contractor with no sick pay, no holiday pay, accountancy costs to pay, IR35 taxes to pay or contract reviews to pay, no free training, no income between contracts, no free health care, no pension contributions paid, no free life insurance.
