A seemingly successful interview but ...

I am contemplating calling the client direct - tomorrow or early next week. Would that be sensible or stupid?

I did that once. I got the gig but the rate kept going down. I was undoubtedly being lied to.

I did phone the client; they were acutely embarrassed at being contacted directly. I said how things had been from my side and what I had been told. The client had been told I was demanding a higher rate.

Nothing came of it. The client just had confirmation the agent was dodgy (what a non-surprise) and I still did not get the gig. It made me feel a bit better, though.

Last time I was on the bench same thing happened to me a few years back. Did a good interview for a well known company in Newbury, agent said it's in the bag but dragged on for a week. I just went to a couple of other interviews and landed a contract on a Friday and started the following Monday. Later that week agent rang back to confirm I had the first position, turned them down obviously. Basically I realised they had someone else for the role and were just playing me along, but looks in this case the other person turned them down.

I had an interview last Wednesday. All went well and client said they would be in touch via the agency on Tuesday.

But on Tuesday the agency said client was having a "rethink"; they had, coincidently, just terminated a number of contractors and were checking to see whether any of these contractors could fill the contract I had applied for. The agency reported to me that the client thought I was the strongest candidate they had interviewed.

I have chased this a couple of times since but the agency are not replying to my calls/emails. I get the feeling that there are some “delaying” tactics going on here. I feel I am not being told the truth by the agency. Am I being too suspicious?

What would be the likely scenarios for an agency doing this? Or am I paranoid?

I wouldnt get your hopes up for this job.Better keep looking although try the agent regularly if you want to occupy some time.

The client has clearly got someone else in mind for the role. This has happened to me once, client told me I had the job, you'll sit here blah, blah, blah.

Did they get me onboard? Nope!

You are quite right of course. I popped out to visit the garden, in order to partake of nicotine, and when I returned, I discovered a hunched-back figure perched upon my Jeep(TM) chair, furiously typing away.

I confronted the aforementioned individual, who proffered the excuse that he was an Agent, and was trying to raise the profile of Agent's Worldwide, from the level of the gutter to the kerb.

I listened to his protestations with sympathy, before instructing the butler to set the dogs upon the fellow.

I don't quite understand how he managed to gain egress in to the manor, however the Head Gardener informs me that there is a growing vermin population in the area, and that a number of rat-holes have been discovered in the West Wing.

- when you have had an interview, have a tiny celebration (a takeaway, a copy of Viz, hire a video...), then write it off and get right on back to sending off applications.

Not at all. It's in the Agent's best interests to be 100% honest with you and their Clients. It's the "code of honour" they live by.



The agent is working his hardest to get you the best rate, and this can take time. Emails have to be written, CV's "bigged up", and a charm offensive needs to be conducted in order to land you the job.

Just be thankful that you have such a pro-active and altruistic agency working their little cotton socks off for you ! God Bless 'Em !

Sounds like they have found a candidate that will be more profitable for them. They are probably talking you down to the client as we speak.

One reason you should never tell agents where you have gone for interviews

1/ they are after leads
2/ they will badmouth you to the client to get their candidates in

Agents are so far from the truth, they are in a parallel universe.

Stop worrying and keep plugging away for more interviews.

If you are lucky you'll land two offers and can play one off against the other.

A similar thing happened to me. If you don't know by tomorrow assume you haven't got the position. Move on to something else and don't waste your time, energy and effort on this role any more.
