    When I was a little kid of about four in the early 50s there still were loads of US GIs going to and from the US by ship. Most of them were black. I asked my mum who those (black) guys were. She replied "They are Americans". It was for many years after I thought all blacks are American and Americans black. Her pop idle at that time whom she also met in person was Paul Robeson.
