Pay for standard class and sit in first, I've always done that and no-one has ever asked me to move.

It's not worth it unless it's the same price - I used 1st class only once in 10 years living in the UK - the price of travel to London was for some reason exactly the same as in the normal class (which was still rip off by EU standards anyway), so I decided to give 1st class a go - a bit nicer, but certainly not worth 2 or more times the price.
