Also you have quoted a word that I did not use, do you understand the concept of using quotes?
You talked about palatable accents, implying his was the opposite. IMHO his accent had noting to do with his success. True that most leaders have been public school educated, but that is not because the public desired it, more that top public schools come with added old school tie networking advantage that hands itself to power and influence. Wilson/Thatcher were the first to break that mould, neither were from the south. At the moment a toff accent is seen as a disadvantage, see George Osbourne recently trying to tone his down.Last edited by Bagpuss; 26 December 2008, 22:35.

. Have you never asked yourself why Calgon adverts have a chap with a Northern accent?
You don't get those adverts outside of the south because the rest of the country doesn't have such disgusting water. But why then an 'unplatable' Northern accent on the ads? It's because it's seen as more trustworthy than a southern one.
Hague was unelectable because he's a twat.

The Tories have to do nothing except wait.
Things are going to get so bad that most people will hate Labour by the end of 2010. Three million unemployed, 150 Billion annual deficit, a burgeoning and unaffordable public sector where cuts should already have been made(but no way because too many votes involved), unaffordable public pensions, and a growing need to tax because of incompetent economic management. It's all set up for a return to a government that promises to balance its budget.

Maybe the Tory policy should be immediate arrest of the key Labour politicians and trying them for treason. If successful UK should withdraw from the human rights act before sentencing is announced...

Plenty of things can and will happen between now and the next election. The political landscape has changed massively in the last four months, and it will change again. Best policy the Tories could put forward is honesty. They should rule out nothing, even planning to raise taxes in the short term if it's the right thing to do.
Big problem I see is the white collar job losses are mostly in Tory boroughs. Many of the votes Labour will lose are in constituencies they would have lost anyway.

Libertarian Party, the site appears to be buggered at the moment; well worth a read when back online.

The biggest mistake the Tories made was to not give Michael "he is Spanish don't you know" Portillo the gig, Hague is a very good politician but his northern accent was not palatable to the southern electorate.
I always backed Major against Blair because I wanted a bloke from Brixton who was self educated above a Fettes educated lawer.
If DC does not win this then I am leaving this sinking ship.

Cameron was hailed as the Tory "Tony Blair"; bad timing really as man_in_the_street_uk has had enough of style over substance. The Tories need a leader with integrity who will state that times are hard, sacrifices will need to be made i.e. someone who could make a modern day "blood, sweat, tears" speech. Dave "hug a Hoodie" just does not cut it. Although he's my preferred Tory leader, I'm still not 100% sure about David Davis under pressure though.

I've lost confidence in the "main" parties. Cameron's not a proper tory anyway.
