Familes risk losing the homes after missing just two mortgage payments, following a High Court ruling.
The judgement reinforced a law from 1925 which allows lenders to sell the homes of people in arrears independently without needing to obtain a court order.
In a case with wide-ranging implications for homeowners a judge dismissed the arguments of the owners of a property who claimed that its sale would infringe their right to "peaceful enjoyment of possessions" under the Human Rights Act.
The High Court judgment instead supported the right of the lender, GMAC-RFC, to appoint receivers and auction the property.
