The UK hasn't been self-sufficient in food since about 1860, when the population was around 20 million. Today it is over 60 million

Pity we all decided to breed like rabbits, then top-up the already overblown population with immigrants, build towns where crops once grew, and then do nothing to promote farming (in fact, smash the farmers)... in a country blessed with excellent climate and soil for crops. It'd be funny if it wasn't so embarrassing. Better not even begin to talk about coal!

Good on the government, but sadly long overdue. One thing about Gordon is he is not style over substance, even if his substance may be suspect. Perhaps they will also examine successive governments seeming self-destructive desire for unrestrained population growth, by importing people en-masses if necessary to fulfil this goal. I don't think we can feed ourselves now and that's not even taking into account that food production is currently heavily subsidised by oil to create fertilers. Doomed. Good on them for getting serious about these things after the horse has bolted though, some good may come of the current turmoil.
