Anyway....I've got a gardener coming out to see us on Saturday Found him on Yell, he lives local and has all his own (petrol sourced) stuff, so Bob's your uncle!

Hayter and Mountfield are both very good. Get one that offers a mulching option if you want the option to avoid having to empty grass cuttings.

Briggs & Stratton and Honda engines are generally accepted to be the best and will last for ages.

For gawds sake, don't buy from B&Q! Go to a mower specialist if you want to see 'em and then buy off the web.

I need to buy a lawn mower. As this is bloke territory, I thought I'd turn to you lot (as my other half knows nothing of such things!)

Although I suppose petrol mowers woudn't require an electric power source would they?

Nope, just bog standard petrol and a bit of oil occasionally. They probably do need a bit of maintenance now and then but mine has had none and I've so far got away with it. You'll probably have a second hand mower shop somewhere local with loads of recon ones but the plus of going to B&Q is you'll get a guarantee to cover yourself initially. They are good for big lawns but you still have to actually get out there and direct the thing

I'd love to get a gardener, but we can't find one with their own source of power (as we wouldn't want to have to be in the house when they're there, and we wouldn't give them a key to plug stuff in).

1. get a socket installed on the outside of your house.
2. wouldn't a good gardener have either a power source or a petrol mower?
3. As people say, get it down to length and then it's easier. Especially if you actually live there all week and can take any opportunity to cut it when it's dry (if you work away, your time is more constrained and you can find it growing too tall while you wait for a dry day when you're at home).
