Since there was a referendum in Chechnya (at the end of the USSR) that voted overwhelmingly to stay in the Russian Federation the Russians were pissed off with the muslim extremists who wanted an independent muslim state regardless of the result.

Yeltsin behaved very badly with his response but the Putin government has pored a lot of money into to Chechnya an most if not all of the war damage has been rebuilt.

By the way don’t forget the massacre of school children in Beslan North Ossetia by Chechen muslim extremists.

So there we have it. The Allies will shortly be launching a full-scale condemnation. We expect air-strikes of dissaproval followed by the launch of long-range handbags. The initial assault will then be followed by lengthy sulking and not talking to the Russians.

It is expected to be over by Christmas.

If Kosovo is legitimate in Western Eyes and South Ossetia in Russia's eyes then Why not Tamil Eelam? They are fighting for self determination and against Srilankan Racists for well over a generation now.

Rather, I think that after a few years of independence, the South Ossetians will decide to formally become part of the greater russia, as opposed to the North Ossetians deciding to become part of a greater Ossetia.

Just piss and wind. The biggest fear of the nuclear super powers must be that their weapons won't work properly, and the other side's will. I base this post lunchtime booze session musing on the fact that the "awe-inspiring" technically excellent, keyhole surgery-like weapons we and the Yanks used in the last Iraq war were, in fact, sometimes duds that missed their targets, never launched, or blew-up short of the target.
