Got back from 16 days in Italy and travelled all over, there were no troops on the streets, but the Carabinieri, transport police, traffic wardens and other police types were all wearing sidearms as usual.

Assuming that the Italian government has had no other option other than deploying troops this way, then it's a sad reflection on their policies, which have led up to this military solution.

Cops on every street could, I suppose, be seen as the same thing, but it's less disturbing for the majority of citizens who are, by and large, law abiding.

It's always the same old story: goverment does feck all, craps its pants when it all starts to go horribly wrong, then introduces a sledgehammer approach.

Will it happen here? Possibly - because we, as a nation, have failed for some time to nip stuff in the bud.
