TBH, I think they were screwed over by their command.
IIRC the ship's Lynx was on the deck, rather than in the air providing top cover.
Asking a lightly armed dinghy to take on a gun-boat is a bit much.
Apparently the captain or admiral, or whatever, needed the Lynx handy as the BBC were filming and may have wished to use it.
I'm sure every generation thinks servicemen of yore were tougher. Victorian army officers probably thought their troops had it cushy compared with the yeomen who fought at Agincourt (and maybe they'd have been right).
But you can only fight your own battles, and when you're in combat it must feel pretty tough going at the time in any age.
P.S. I'm sure shrapnel from a roadside bomb in Iraq hurts much the same as a splinter from a broadside at Trafalgar, or an arrow at Hastings.
NO, but Cat Deeley will be giving an exclusive interview in which she will finally reveal why she disagrees so vehemently with Roy Glauber over his theories of quantum mechanical behavior of trapped wave packets.
Oh, I am so looking forward to that.....Cat Deeley is hottttt!!!
Your brother by definition (and anyone in an elite service) would not be the problem. I'm talking about the general population: could the Big Brother, Ibiza druggie generation endure constant bombing, crap food and long hours on poor pay on a consistent basis?
WWII wouldn't happen in today's modern battlefield. Rocketry and smart bombs have taken care of that. So it's a bit of a mute point, but I agree, if you took today's populace and dumped them in 1939 Britain would be fubar'ed.
Can I read about both these in this weeks "exciting" heat magazine?

There are alot of chavs who will not accept a job if they have to work hard (such as fruit picking). They would have quite a culture shock with anything where they have few rights but lots of responsibilities.
