I run my car on Nitro. £5 per litre. I'm a proper contractor after all and don't give a toss about the price of fuel...or the environment....
-
Does it really matter?
Fuel costs alone, the difference between running a 4.2 SC Range Rover and 3.6 TDV8 Range Rover is 0.1p per mile!
I've cancelled my Diesel and am buying the petrol version.
The Skoda goes back next month!

My 2.0 Primera manages 34 mpg, and I don't do constant 56. I do constant 90+, and hard acceleration up to 6000 rpm in each gear at every oppurtunity.
I suspect an equivalent diesel wouldn't save me anything, but a small crappy diesel would, if only because it'd be so boring I'd drive sensibly.

I've owned a 325ci BMW and a new 320d.
petrol model did average 32 MPG and diesel does 45 MPG over a month average.
So 13 MPG difference. However the 325 petrol was so quiet you did not notice the engine running, smooth as silk.
The diesel is loud, vibrates and is well, a diesel.
Taking into account the extra costs involved with the diesel you would save enough in a month to buy some ear defenders.

If you are the sort of bloke who brings his own sandwiches to work and buys his clothes from Primark and ASDA, then a diesel makes sense.

The diesel has been 10 p + more than petrol only recently... With fuel cost rocketing I was expecting diesel cars to become more valuable than petrol. But if they keep widening the difference between petrol and diesel...

Two things Autoexpress neglect are:
1/ Few people drive at a constant 56mph.
2/ Petrol consumption figures are largely a work of fantasy
Your average 2.0 petrol will give no more than about 30mpg on the average drive, sometimes less. Most diesels will return at least 40mpg on all routes i.e will use at least 1/4 less fuel than the similar petrol.
