If you're in a hugely competitive sector (e.g. Holiday Properties to Let in Spain) you chances of fairly and squarely nailing the top 50 (never mind 10) slots on Google SERPS are almost nill.
If you are offering some specialist product or service then you have every chance if you do it right.
Doing it right means offering meaningful content which used semantic markup. Proper use of page titles, headings etc. Inbound links will boost page rank but they should be from relevant, reputable sites.
Shady SEO tricks like keyword spamming, link spam, hidden text loaded with keywords and links, will help, but can also get your domain permanently banned from Google's index.
Also, Google is the only search engine that matters. If you do well in Google, the others will follow.
Any SEO who tells you he has special insight into how Google's ranking algorithm works is a liar - it's a 'closely guarded moving target'.
Google also fecks up spectacularly when they fiddle with the ranking system and do the infamous Google Dance. Good, well ranked sites can disappear from the index for months on end with no word of explanation and no right of appeal.
I have my own website but have never been able to place top 10 in the search engines. I have read about SEO and even tried to optimize to achieve better positioning without any results.
Can anyone point me to the right direction? I really don't know what I am doing wrong. I am not a professional developer, I am self taught, but have been writing html for years.

You may have overdone it with the keywords or have too many links.
