I worked once for a company where I had a 3 month Probation period with a usefully short notice period. The thing was that it took them > 6 months to tell me that I had "passed" and was no longer on probation. At about 5.5 months I had asked if I could still leave on a short notice, but no-one had any idea as to the answer to this.

My last permie job had a 6 month probation period, they had this very tedious 10 year security check before offering me the job and when I was in they started querying certain references.

I took the probation period as the opportunity to jump to contracting as I'd always had problems with the permie notice period before that

I had a compramise agreement drawn up with a company I worked for. Aka they paid me some serious £££ to leave.


Went to another company and was out on my arse within 2 months. Then went contracting - ker-ching.

I too have been where you have been Sockpuppet. (Feels very weird addressing a professional guy as sockpuppet, it has to be said!)

Ended up taking the sicky option to get an interview, returned from my sick time and my account was locked out! Very amusing.

Best one was for a firm I was with for literally two months as a permie, and they kept paying me for another 4 months after that. Still got the money – going to change my mortgage with Abbey to flexible Plus where I can put the money in the savings pot to resuce the term of my mortgage. Rock on

One week suite me great – it will be good if I choose to stay – if I get a good long term gig I will have easy option to bail. Hence feeling very happy about things!

Yes but equally the purpose of a probation period is to ensure they have the right to get rid of you should you turn out to be a total twat. This actually happened to someone I know (and he was a twat so he deserved it).

For 90% of people the probation period shouldn't be a worry or something to even blink at.

£45K sounds OK, but It'll work out at about £10 per hour taking into account all the unpaid overtime they'll probably expect.

I went for a permie interview earlier for a laugh. Decent money, but the bonus is questionable. I bet I'd see 25% of that figure even if I slogged myself to death.

Shocking company. No job spec, no defined boundries of what I'm working on (or where), it just sounded like hell. It could well be another permies dream job, who knows.

After that stark reminder, all I can say is no way am I going back to that ****. I'll stay on the bench for as long as it takes. I'm not going back to permie land.

No problem

Probation is a really silly thing to put in a contract for a contractor going perm.

No doubt it is one or two weeks notice. As a result you are now free to get a contract while they pay you for your permie work (sub-contract standard).

When you quit on them with that short notice, they will have learned the error of their ways the hard way. No doubt they will have to hire a contractor to replace you :P

But you won't mind as you will have a nice new gig.

Not got a buyer yet, so not too bothered about that small detail as yet!

As my equity is around 65% and WELL within my income multiples, should be fine for the mortage - well, what is should, and the reality is oftenm very different. Mind you, I have been there for 6 months, and I guess I could push for the contract to be amended if that is the clincher....
