Ok, newer ones do (more fuel efficent). They have 16 gears to get more efficency. You can go 0 - 56mph using 3 gears. You generally start in 3rd shift to 5th then 8th.
But there are also half gears. e.g. 8 high and 8 low. Not to be confused with High and Low range, all 16 gears selected from a (if manual) gear stick with 4 positions. Each to keep engine in the green efficency band. So 16 overall gears. Oh....and 4 reverse
