The prices of essential household goods and bills are rising at double the rate they were six months ago, according to analysis for The Daily Telegraph that shows that the real cost of living is twice the official rate of inflation.

Utility bills, food, transport, health and household maintenance have increased by 5.1 per cent, analysis of official data by Capital Economics, the forecasting house, discloses.

This is 13 times the 0.4 per cent rate of inflation for luxury goods, such as the cost of eating at a restaurant, air fares, clothes, alcohol and electrical equipment.

The rate for luxury goods is at its lowest for 18 months and is the main reason why the Government's official rate of inflation has remained so low.
