Since minimum temperatures occur at night, its easy to explain night hotspots as: (i) urban heat islands (especially Manchester and London and to a lesser extent Swindon and Oxford) and (ii) the moderating effect of the sea (all coastlines, especially Atlantic facing ones).

Daylight sunshine hours seem to generally follow topology, since the Mendips and Exmoor have significantly less sunshine than their surrounding lowland areas. The opposite may also be true. Anomalies are Newcastle (rainshadow?) and the South Downs (a 'bright' upland area) and darkspots (Thetford and Great Yarmouth).
