The only thing that hospitals are guilty is not paying our nurses (the backbone of the NHS) a decent salary, hence the best have all gone private or to other countries. Replacements (from places like the Philippines and the Indian and African continents) are not very strong on hygiene, hence the problem.

fact is the nurses in the country are all being told they are specialists when in fact what they need to do is to not allow old ladies to sit in a pool of urine for days on end, to sit with them and make sure they can feed themselves, and so on. They don't do this.

I've seen the inside of NHS hospitals on a couple of occasions and apart from a few, mainly the Filipiino nurses, a lot of them seem bereft of the essential job of nursing actually CARING for people. Nobody bothered to make sure the old women could eat their food.

I also have experience of nursing in a SE Asian hospital and the difference is night and day. The nurses spend their time doing actual nursing, and caring for people, and can I say they kept the place SPOTLESS, and would be sacked for any hygiene transgression.

I also have personal knowledge of nurse training over there and they spend three years teaching about actual nursing, i.e. how to wipe a backside, give an injection, and to do the job of nursing people back to health. In case you aren't aware, traditional nursing did NOT have a massive MRSA/cleanliness problem, they'd be horrified by the dodgy stains in the toilets and so on. And in these countries they follow traditional methods, not just in nursing but in education, law and order, and so on as well, as can easily be seen in these places.

It's modern nursing that's the problem: if you want proper traditional nurses best place to get them would be somewhere like The Philipines. I would be very happy if the NHS was staffed by only Asian nurses, as I have no doubt whatsoever the hygiene standards and old people lying getting horrific bed sores due to lack of care would be much better.

In the spirit of free enterprise, one who is 'self-employed' should make provisions for such a turn of unfortunate events. Hence, the much maligned 'loss of earnings' insurance should cover any losses and not the state.

I absolutely agree with Ferret - why would anyone have employed her after that hideous lip job? Is she going to sue her husband who is allegedly violent and put her in there in the first place?

On the news yesterday there was a man who had contracted MRSA and had lost "half his insides and some ribs" but couldn't afford to sue as they were asking for too much money up front. She should think herself flipping lucky that she has recovered.
