If he's an IT bod then try some agencies he's likely to be registered with, I've tracked down people via this route. You need a friendly agent who knows you aren't stalking !

Have you tried an electoral roll search? If you knew an approx area where he lived (or was registered), who he lived with, a middle name etc etc at the time then you may be in luck. Try 192.com
