Free Speech is an oxymoron, since by definition, speech is anything *but* free, and always comes at a price.

The price being whether is is offensive to others, or not offensive.

Moderation serves a purpose, and that is to ensure the board does not constantly plumb the depths of offensive behaviour.

Ergo, it is a good thing, IMHO, and serves the majority well.

I accept that there will always be a minority who disapprove of moderation, and argue the right to free speech at any cost, but they seem to forget that there is no such thing as "rights" without "responsibilities".

Good work SP and Ferret. I run a WOW guild and we moderate Guild Chat to keep it reasonably clean and pleasant to be in. (No swearing for example).

This is to ensure that all members talk to each other with respect, and more importantly, to set boundaries for acceptable communication.

As such, we are one of the most social and successful guilds on our Server and have to limit membership, because simply, we're a safe and mature environment to play in. Even if guild chat does tend to veer off in to the surreal and bizarre (which is ofc encouraged)

I dont think people should be allowed aliases though - it's very deceitful. You've got to have an element of trust on these things surely? Or am I just being a big girl?

p.s. hello ferret - learn all you can from Scotspine, he is wise like owl.
    Sal you creep so sweetly.

I also agree that people should not have multiple ID's.
Unless of course they can generate multiple IP addresses
and then only if they are nice people

There's a level...yes but free speech is important - just feels a bit like the bible belt in here sometimes. My comment wasn't anything particularly shocking. Definitely no donkeys mentioned....yet...

simply because if i allow that, 2 days later i'm deluged by posts involving donkeys. why do some folk insist on being allowed to wade through the gutter before they decide that the moderation is acceptable? there are paedophiles who would object to similar moderation. are their objections justifiable? if not, why are yours? are you the sole arbiter of moral judgement? grief! lol indeed....!

The only reason for 'banning' should be if someone attacks someone in a personal way...and not just jibing, winding up or whatever.

He didn't leave as a result of a particular thread, as such - just the general tone and content of his posts, and he volunteered to leave so he could come back to the board as English History X and whoever else.

I think this was this thread that kicked it off, along with the admins just biding their time to see if he/she was merely winding us up for a laugh.

I don't really care EHX - debate wasn't on the 'plate' here, he wasn't attempting to debate with us. I personally abhor the BNP, national socialism and the thinly veiled racism we saw here, and welcome the banning/resignation of members who post this kind of tripe.

If that includes you, then seeya - whether you're a CD alter-ego or not.
