what would you consider to be a fair amount to give the wife every week for house keeping ?

After bills, food etc.. are taken into account - the wife gets about £100/week. Which can barely manage to cover her shoe bill - nevermind the jewelry and clothes.
You should both give an equal amount, or if you want to make it even fairer, each give a percentage of your earnings so that each contributes in accordance with their ability.
