I lived in Southampton for 4 years as a student. Around the Portswood and Bevois Valley area are all the student hangouts so I'd imagine you'd want to avoid them (altho isn't it going home to mummy and daddys time for all the kiddies now?) and head towards the centre of town.
London Road, which is just off the end of The Avenue (big dual carriage way), and the surrounding streets have many decent bars and a few of the nicer clubs (including the FYEO as mentioned here already), I would recommend a crawl around there until you find one that fits your tastes.
Alternatively you could head down to Ocean Village, which is further south, towards the docks, where there are some 'super clubs' such as Ikon and Diva and there are also a bunch of large generic chain bars down there, but it was a bit too towny/pikey for my liking.
All this info is 5 years out of date tho so could have all changed... I doubt it tho!

I have lived in Southampton for 5 years and NEVER gone out for the night there, apart from the odd meal. If I'm going out on the razz, I take the train to London and stay up there for the weekend...
In the main, Southampton is full of student types and pikies....similar to Pompey, although at least there are some decent bars in Gunwharf Quays.

Nice one Pig
Worked in Scum (sorry S****ampton) earlier this year. Not much to make it stand out from any other city centre. Does not strike as being an entertaining sort of place. Bournemouth may offer more opportunities.

Bournemouth has Spearmint, For Your Eyes Only, Fantasy Palace and best of all Wiggle, plus decent bars and clubs.
Prob only twice as much in a taxi than So'ton would be.

I come from the South but I've never been to Southampton, and come to think of it I've never met anyone from Southampton. So I'm not sure what to expect.

Thanks for that advice. It's enough to get us started.
I feel between us all we have probably covered most of the bars in Christendom, but Southampton is unchartered territory to me.

The town centre atmosphere depends on whether there are any big ships in.
The brasses hang out on St Mary's Road.

If it was up to me we'd be in Copenhagen or Stockholme
If you go in just head for town centre lots of watering holes but you make ur mind up when you get in them!!! Some of outskirting areas are scary so I would avoid.
Not a lot in New Forest really just a few village pubs, if your lucky!!!
Personally would go to Bucharest lots of fun to be had!!!
