Damn - actually had a semi-serious (ok, quarter-serious) contribution to make before it eroded into the usual (laudable) mirth.
I used to think my instincts were bang-on, but as time has passed and I've invariably aged, I realise that the failings of my instincts were often plastered over by sheer pride. I might have thought someone is a waste of flesh, and would continue to think so, when in fact I had caught that person on an off day or just hadn't given them the time of day to prove otherwise.
Now, I'm not so sure. I try and give people enough rope to hang themselves with.
